How do you calculate how much drywall you need?
A 12x10 ft room with 8 ft walls, one door and one window needs 11 sheets of 4x8 drywall for the walls.
We take the wall area (perimeter times height), subtract 21 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window, add the ceiling if you include it, add 10% for cuts, and divide by the sheet size. Screws are estimated at about one per square foot of drywall, or 32 per 4x8 sheet.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 drywall sheets?
4x12 sheets mean fewer seams to tape and are faster on long walls, but they are heavy and hard to carry alone. 4x8 sheets are easier for one person and fit in most cars.
How many screws per sheet of drywall?
About 32 screws for a 4x8 sheet on walls with studs 16 in apart: screws every 12 in along each stud. Ceilings need a little more, about every 8 in.
How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12x12 room?
With 8 ft walls, one door and one window, about 12 sheets of 4x8 for the walls, or 17 if you also cover the ceiling. That includes 10% extra for cuts.
What thickness of drywall should I use?
1/2 in is standard for walls. Use 5/8 in for ceilings with framing 24 in apart, and fire-rated 5/8 in Type X where codes require it, such as walls shared with a garage.
