How do you calculate how much baseboard you need?

A 12x10 ft room with one door needs 41 linear feet of baseboard, or 6 pieces of 8 ft trim with extra for cuts.

We take the room's perimeter, subtract 3 ft for each doorway, add 10% for miter cuts and mistakes, and divide by the length of one piece. The result is rounded up to whole pieces.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure for baseboard?

Measure the length of each wall at floor level, add them up, and subtract the width of each doorway. Closets and alcoves count too.

How much extra baseboard should I buy?

About 10% extra covers miter cuts at corners and a mistake or two. Add more if the room has many short walls or outside corners.

How many pieces of baseboard do I need for a 12x12 room?

With one door, the room needs 45 linear feet. With 10% extra for cuts, buy 7 pieces of 8 ft.

Should I paint baseboard before installing it?

It saves time: paint the pieces flat, install them, then fill the nail holes and touch up. Leave the final coat for after caulking the top edge.
